Physical Education

At Hextable Primary School we aim to be a school where:

We are a happy and inclusive school, proud of our children, our achievement and behaviour

At Hextable Primary School, our PE curriculum aims to develop ‘happy, positive, successful and lifelong learners’. We aim to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel individual’s abilities in competitive sports and other physically- demanding activities. We will provide opportunities for pupils to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. PE at Hextable Primary is an imperative element of the curriculum, which develops a need for healthy life styles, a balanced diet, positive growth mind-set and the resilience to persevere with activities. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

PE is taught twice on a weekly basis. Opportunities are given for the pupils to complete these lessons inside and outside. As well as our regular PE lessons, we provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, The Daily Mile and in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being for all pupils.

In EYFS, pupils begin to improve their fundamental movement skills and teachers begin to consider the development of agility, balance and coordination for each pupil.

In Key Stage One pupils are given opportunities to develop their fundamental movement skills and extend their agility, balance and coordination. They engage in competitive and cooperative physical activities through games, dance and gymnastics.

In Key Stage Two pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching. These skills are incorporated into competitive games, performances using movement patterns and evaluations of their own and others’ work. Pupils communicate and collaborate with each other and develop an understanding of how to improve in physical activities. There are many opportunities across the year for children

During the academic year, years 3-5 attend White Oak Leisure Centre for swimming lessons. In the Summer term they have the chance to show off their skills in the annual Swimming Gala, where year 6 and staff also participate. Throughout the year we host two Sports Days, for KS1 and KS2 which include track and field events, as well as more creative fun races. All children throughout the school are encouraged to participate in the day.

School Games Mark

In 2018/19 Hextable Primary School was awarded the School Games Silver Mark for our outstanding participation in sport. During 2019/20 we received recognition for our ongoing commitment and achievement in the School Games Programme as well as being recognising for our support, commitment and engagement of virtual programmes.

In 2021/2022 Hextbale Primary School was awarded the School Games Gold Mark for our outstanding participation in sport.

Being a part of both Swanley and Dartford District Sports Associations allows the children multiple opportunities to compete in sporting events throughout the year. A football and netball league runs for year 5 and 6 pupils, and there are several tournaments for tag rugby, cross country, athletics and rounders.

We also offer a wide selection of sporting clubs, which you can find out more about on our clubs page.
