Provide our pupils with opportunities to be active and healthy

Engage pupils of all ages in physical activity.

Increase pupil confidence and competence in all areas of PE for children of all ages and ability to ensure they achieve the best they can at their own pace and level.

Enhance pupils’ understanding of how to lead active, healthy lifestyles and encourage and promote this through opportunities involving cooking, recipe creation and extra-curricular activities.

Use outdoor learning to contribute further development to the PE curriculum

Ensure all children have the opportunity to participate in inclusive competition.    

Quality of Teaching


Ensure all staff develop confidence and have CPD opportunities to deliver high quality PE lessons.

Ensure the involvement of outside agencies to develop high quality PE teaching

Behaviour and Safety of Pupils


Ensure pupils understand how to keep themselves safe during sport and exercise.

Promote SMSC through sport and PE, encouraging children to understand the importance of working as part of a TEAM, developing resilience, self-belief and determination to achieve their own personal best while supporting others to do the same.

Leadership and Management


Ensure quality teaching of PE and sport both during curriculum and non-curriculum time

Develop systems for monitoring of delivering high quality PE lessons.

Develop systems for monitoring of external deliverers e.g. coaches

Raise the profile of PE internally through on-going initiatives e.g. The Daily Mile and fundraising events

 Why do children need a quality programme of Physical Education?


Children learn to understand the importance of exercising for a lifetime. 

Regular, physical activity is the best antidote to eliminate obesity and maintain an acceptable body weight.  It also provides a positive alternative to watching television or playing on tablets, computers or mobile phones. 

Children learn the fundamental motor skills that enable them to develop the competence that creates confidence and leads to safe and successful participation in a wide range of sports. 

Children are encouraged to improve their fitness levels during PE lessons, including muscular and cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility.

Youngsters can learn valuable lessons about accepting responsibility for their personal development leading to greater self-discipline.

PE promotes opportunities for children to be creative, cooperative and competitive and to face up to different challenges both as individuals and in groups.

 A 'good workout' helps ease stress, tension and anxiety and will result in better attention in class.

Many activities taught in PE require children to work in groups to solve problems or as a team.  These opportunities are excellent for developing both leadership and coopeOration skills.

Sports activities are an excellent way to meet and make new friends.  Confidence in one’s physical abilities encourages youngsters, and later adults, to socialise more easily and 'fit into' a variety of situations. 

Movement can be used to reinforce the understanding of many subjects taught in the classroom e.g. mathematics.  Movement is also associated with enhanced brain functioning.

PE is especially important to children who have yet to develop their verbal communication skills.  Thus, their confidence in physical abilities can lead to positive feelings of self-esteem.

Children learn to develop the notion of fair play, honest competition, good sportsmanship and dealing with both success and defeat.

Hextable Primary School Progression of Skills in PE 


PE skill development is a sequential process, and that is reflected in the teaching of PE. Lessons are taught with clear fluency between lessons, connecting learning and building on the skills previously learnt. Children are engaged in lessons which consist of learning new skills, practising and the applying into a game or competitive context. 


During the academic year, years 3-5 attend White Oak Leisure Centre for swimming lessons. In the Summer term they have the chance to show off their skills in the annual Swimming Gala, where year 6 and staff also participate. Throughout the year we host two Sports Days, for KS1 and KS2 which include track and field events, as well as more creative fun races. All children throughout the school are encouraged to participate in the day. 


In 2018/19 Hextable Primary School was awarded the School Games Silver Mark for our outstanding participation in sport. During 2019/20 we received recognition for our ongoing commitment and achievement in the School Games Programme as well as being recognising for our support, commitment and engagement of virtual programmes.




Being a part of both Swanley and Dartford District Sports Associations allows the children multiple opportunities to compete in sporting events throughout the year. A football and netball league runs for year 5 and 6 pupils, and there are several tournaments for tag rugby, cross country, athletics and rounders.
